Jays Claim 1B Mauro Gomez; DFA Dave Bush

It seems as if Dave Bush was given roughly the same minuscule length of rope that was afforded to Jeremy Jeffress. After just one (albeit horrible) appearance in which he surrendered four home runs, Bush was designated for assignment today. The move was necessitated when the Jays claimed 1B Mauro Gomez, formerly of the Boston Red Sox, off the waiver wire. Gomez himself was a DFA victim to begin the season when rookie Jackie Bradley Jr. was added to the Sox’ 40-man roster.

Gomez is a 28-year old corner infielder who’s bounced around three organizations, only last year reaching the majors. He managed to post a .275 / .324 / .422 offensive line, not terrible, but hardly the production one would expect from a 1B/DH type. He has managed to hit 20+ HRs in four different minor league seasons, but at 28, he’s long since lost whatever prospect status he once may have had.

Given that Luis Jimenez, Adam Loewen and Andy LaRoche are already on the AAA Bisons roster, it’s not clear at this point what the Jays’ plans are for Gomez at this time.

UPDATE: We’ve since learned Gomez has been optioned to AAA Buffalo.
